Abstract
This proposal sets out a mixed-methods study examining how formative feedback influences student attainment in secondary education. Formative feedback, understood here as information communicated to a learner with the explicit purpose of closing the gap between current and desired performance, has long been associated with substantial learning gains (Black and Wiliam, 1998; Hattie and Timperley, 2007). Yet the classroom conditions under which feedback translates into measurable attainment remain contested, and much depends on how, when and by whom feedback is given. The study will investigate the relationship between the quality and form of formative feedback and the attainment of Key Stage 4 pupils in a single English secondary school, alongside teachers’ and pupils’ perceptions of feedback practice. A convergent parallel design will combine analysis of anonymised assessment records with semi-structured interviews and a pupil questionnaire. The intended contribution is a grounded, practitioner-facing account of the feedback features that pupils and teachers judge most useful, situated within the wider evidence base. Background and Rationale
Formative assessment occupies a central position in contemporary debates about effective teaching. Since the influential review by Black and Wiliam (1998), which synthesised more than 250 studies and reported that strengthening formative practice produced learning gains among the largest ever recorded for an educational intervention, feedback has been widely promoted as a lever for raising standards. Hattie (2009), in his synthesis of meta-analyses, likewise identified feedback as one of the most powerful influences on achievement, while cautioning that its effect size is unusually variable. This variability is the crux of the problem the proposed study addresses. Feedback is not uniformly beneficial: Kluger and DeNisi (1996) found that a substantial minority of feedback interventions actually depressed performance, particularly where feedback directed attention towards the self rather than the task. The practical question for schools, therefore, is not whether to give feedback but how to give feedback that reliably supports learning.
The variability is not merely statistical noise; it reflects the fact that feedback is a relational and interpretive act rather than a simple transfer of information. A comment that one pupil experiences as clarifying may be experienced by another as discouraging, and the same written remark may be acted upon, misunderstood or ignored depending on the pupil’s confidence, prior attainment and understanding of the assessment standard. This interpretive dimension means that the effect of feedback cannot be read off from its content alone; it is mediated by what happens between the moment of receipt and any subsequent revision of work. The Education Endowment Foundation (2021), reviewing the evidence for an English audience, reached a similar conclusion, noting that feedback is among the most cost-effective approaches available to schools but that its impact is highly dependent on implementation. It is precisely this space between promise and realisation that the proposed study seeks to examine.
In the English secondary context, this question carries additional weight. Marking and feedback consume a considerable proportion of teachers’ working time, and workload associated with written marking has been repeatedly identified as a driver of teacher attrition. The Independent Teacher Workload Review Group (2016) concluded that a great deal of marking was unnecessarily burdensome and, crucially, that quantity of marking was often mistaken for quality of feedback. If certain forms of feedback contribute little to attainment while imposing a heavy burden, there is both a pedagogical and a professional case for scrutinising practice. At the same time, accountability pressures at Key Stage 4, where pupils’ GCSE outcomes shape school performance measures, mean that attainment is a salient and consequential outcome for stakeholders. A study that examines the link between feedback practice and attainment in this phase speaks directly to decisions that senior leaders and classroom teachers make routinely, and to a policy environment in which the sustainability of teachers’ workload has become a recognised concern.
The rationale for the present study is thus threefold. First, the general efficacy of feedback is well established, but the specific conditions that make feedback effective in ordinary secondary classrooms are less well understood and warrant close, context-sensitive investigation. Second, existing evidence is dominated by intervention studies and controlled comparisons; there is comparatively less research that examines how feedback operates within the routine assessment cycles of a functioning school, where teachers juggle competing demands and pupils encounter feedback as one element of a busy timetable. Third, pupil voice is frequently absent from feedback research, even though learners’ interpretation of feedback is a necessary condition for its uptake (Nicol and Macfarlane-Dick, 2006). By combining attainment data with the perspectives of both teachers and pupils, the study seeks to illuminate not only whether feedback is associated with attainment but why particular practices are experienced as helpful or unhelpful.
Aim, Objectives and Research Questions
The overarching aim of the study is to examine the relationship between formative feedback practices and student attainment in secondary education, and to identify the features of feedback that teachers and pupils perceive as most conducive to learning.
The objectives are:
1. To characterise the formative feedback practices currently used by teachers in Key Stage 4 within the case-study school. 2. To examine the association between the form and frequency of formative feedback and pupil attainment in a defined subject area. 3. To explore teachers’ rationales for their feedback practices and the constraints that shape them. 4. To investigate how pupils interpret, value and act upon the feedback they receive.
These objectives give rise to the following research questions:
- RQ1. What forms of formative feedback are used with Key Stage 4 pupils in the case-study school, and how frequently?
- RQ2. Is there an observable association between particular forms of formative feedback and pupil attainment over the course of an academic term?
- RQ3. How do teachers and pupils account for the perceived usefulness of different feedback practices?
The questions deliberately combine an associational component (RQ2) with interpretive components (RQ1 and RQ3), reflecting the mixed-methods orientation of the design. RQ1 is primarily descriptive and establishes the character of practice in the setting; RQ2 tests whether that practice is patterned in relation to attainment; and RQ3 seeks the meanings that make any such pattern intelligible. Together they move from description, through association, to explanation, so that the quantitative and qualitative strands address complementary facets of a single problem rather than running in parallel without meeting.
Conceptual Framework
The study is guided by a conceptual framework that treats formative feedback not as a direct cause of attainment but as an input whose effect is mediated by learner-level mechanisms. Drawing on Sadler (1989), Nicol and Macfarlane-Dick (2006) and Hattie and Timperley (2007), the framework proposes that feedback influences attainment principally by strengthening pupils’ self-regulation of learning, that is, their capacity to understand the standard being aimed for, to monitor their own performance against it and to take purposeful action to close the gap, and by supporting motivation and engagement, since feedback that is specific and task-focused tends to sustain effort whereas feedback perceived as evaluative of the self can undermine it (Butler, 1988). These mechanisms are in turn moderated by the qualities of the feedback itself, notably its task focus, its timeliness and, decisively, whether the learner takes it up and acts upon it, as well as by the practical constraints of teacher workload. Figure 1 summarises these relationships.

Framing the study in this way has methodological consequences. Because attainment is understood to be several steps removed from feedback itself, the design must attend not only to whether feedback and attainment move together but to the intervening experiences that the framework identifies. This is one reason the study pairs attainment records with pupil and teacher accounts: the qualitative strand is intended to interrogate the mechanisms that the quantitative strand can only gesture towards.
Literature Context
The theoretical foundation for the study rests on a well-developed body of scholarship. Sadler (1989) provided an early and enduring conceptualisation of formative assessment, arguing that for feedback to be effective the learner must possess a concept of the standard being aimed for, be able to compare their current performance against that standard, and be able to take action to close the gap. This tripartite condition foregrounds the learner’s active role and anticipates later work on self-regulation. It also implies that feedback which merely reports a judgement, without helping the learner to internalise the standard or to see a route towards it, is unlikely to raise attainment however conscientiously it is delivered.
Black and Wiliam (1998), and Wiliam’s (2011) subsequent elaboration of embedded formative assessment, translated these principles into classroom strategies, emphasising the sharing of success criteria, the use of questioning to elicit evidence of learning, and comment-only marking in preference to grades. A recurring finding in this literature is that attaching marks or grades to feedback can undermine the effect of accompanying comments, because pupils attend to the grade at the expense of the guidance (Black and Wiliam, 1998). The mechanism was demonstrated experimentally by Butler (1988), who found that pupils given comments alone subsequently outperformed and showed greater interest than those given grades, or grades accompanied by comments, a result that speaks directly to the motivational strand of the present framework.
Hattie and Timperley (2007) offered an influential model distinguishing feedback according to the level at which it operates. Their four levels, summarised in Table 1, provide a useful vocabulary for characterising the practices observed in the case-study school and will inform the coding of documentary examples and interview data.

Shute (2008), in a comprehensive review, drew together guidelines for effective formative feedback, highlighting specificity, timeliness and a focus on the task, and cautioning against feedback that is so detailed it overwhelms the learner. Nicol and Macfarlane-Dick (2006) reframed feedback as a process that should build learners’ capacity to regulate their own learning rather than a transmission of information from teacher to pupil, articulating seven principles of good feedback practice that place the learner, not the teacher, at the centre of the feedback loop. Taken together, this scholarship suggests that the effectiveness of feedback depends less on its quantity than on its qualities, on its timing, and crucially on whether learners understand and act upon it. This convergence between the theoretical literature and the practice-focused synthesis of the Education Endowment Foundation (2021) lends confidence to the framework adopted here. The proposed study is positioned within this tradition and seeks to test its insights against the realities of one secondary setting, where the tidy distinctions of the models meet the untidy conditions of everyday teaching.
Methodology
Design. The study will adopt a convergent parallel mixed-methods design within a single-school case study (Creswell and Creswell, 2018; Yin, 2018). Quantitative and qualitative strands will be conducted concurrently, analysed separately and then integrated during interpretation. This design is appropriate because the research questions require both an examination of association (attainment data) and an understanding of meaning (teacher and pupil perspectives). A case-study frame is adopted because the study seeks depth and contextual insight rather than statistical generalisation, and because feedback is embedded in the particular routines, policies and relationships of a given school in ways that a decontextualised survey would obscure. The philosophical orientation is broadly pragmatist: methods are selected for their fitness to the questions rather than in allegiance to a single paradigm, and quantitative and qualitative evidence are treated as complementary lenses on a shared object of inquiry.
Sample. The research will be conducted in one non-selective English secondary school, selected through convenience and access. Within that school, the study will focus on Key Stage 4 pupils in a single subject department to hold curriculum and assessment structures broadly constant, thereby reducing the number of confounding factors that could obscure any relationship between feedback and attainment. The anticipated sample comprises approximately 90 pupils across three or four teaching classes, together with the four to six teachers responsible for those classes. Purposive sampling will be used to select a smaller group of pupils (approximately 12) for interview, aiming for variation in prior attainment so that the accounts gathered reflect the range of ways in which feedback is experienced rather than only the perspective of the most confident pupils. This is a purposive, non-probability sample; findings will therefore be analytically rather than statistically generalisable, and claims will be framed accordingly.
Data collection. Three sources of data will be used, and their alignment with the research questions is set out in Table 2. First, anonymised assessment records for the participating classes will be obtained for one academic term, providing attainment measures at the start and end of the period so that change over time can be estimated. Second, teachers will take part in semi-structured interviews of approximately 40 minutes exploring their feedback practices and rationales, the constraints they work within, and their judgements about what pupils do with the feedback they give. Third, a short questionnaire administered to participating pupils will capture their experiences and valuation of feedback, combining Likert-type items with two open-response questions. A sub-sample of pupils will additionally be interviewed in small groups to elaborate on questionnaire themes, group interviews being chosen for younger participants because the format is less intimidating than a one-to-one encounter with an adult researcher. Documentary examples of feedback, such as marked work and the department’s marking policy, will be reviewed to contextualise the accounts given and to allow feedback to be classified against the levels set out in Table 1.

Analysis. Quantitative data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and, where appropriate, correlational analysis to examine the association between feedback characteristics and change in attainment over the term; the modest sample size means that any quantitative findings will be treated as indicative rather than confirmatory, and no causal claims will be advanced from this strand alone. Qualitative interview and open-response data will be analysed using reflexive thematic analysis following the six-phase approach of Braun and Clarke (2006), moving from familiarisation and coding to the generation and refinement of themes, with an explicit acknowledgement that the researcher’s own assumptions shape the analysis rather than contaminating an otherwise neutral process. Integration will occur at the interpretation stage, using a joint display to compare patterns across the two strands and to identify convergence, divergence and complementarity, so that, for example, a statistical association between comment-only marking and attainment gains could be examined against pupils’ own accounts of how they used such comments.
Ethical Considerations
The study will be conducted in accordance with the British Educational Research Association’s ethical guidelines (BERA, 2018) and will secure institutional ethics approval before any data are collected. Because the research involves minors, particular care will be taken over consent, protection and the asymmetry of power between an adult researcher and child participants. Ethical practice is treated here not as a preliminary hurdle to be cleared but as a continuing responsibility that runs through recruitment, fieldwork, analysis and reporting.
Informed consent will be sought from the headteacher acting in loco parentis and from the individual teachers participating. For pupils, opt-in parental or carer consent will be obtained, and pupils themselves will give assent after receiving an age-appropriate information sheet explaining the study in plain language, including what participation involves, what will happen to the information they provide and how they may stop taking part. Participation will be voluntary, and pupils and teachers will be free to withdraw at any point without consequence and without needing to give a reason; a clear cut-off date after which withdrawal of already-anonymised data may not be practicable will be stated in advance. It will be made explicit that a decision to participate or withdraw will have no bearing on any pupil’s assessment, marks or standing in school, a point of particular importance given that the researcher may be perceived as connected to the school’s own authority.
Anonymity and confidentiality will be safeguarded throughout. Pupils and teachers will be assigned pseudonyms, the school will not be named in any output, and assessment records will be anonymised before analysis so that the researcher does not handle identifiable attainment data unnecessarily. Data will be stored securely in encrypted form, accessible only to the researcher, and retained and disposed of in line with data-protection requirements, with a lawful basis for processing identified and a plan for secure deletion at the end of the retention period. The researcher will remain alert to the power asymmetry noted above, will avoid any practice that could feel like assessment or surveillance, and will follow the school’s safeguarding procedures at all times. Should any disclosure raising a safeguarding concern arise, it will be passed to the designated safeguarding lead in accordance with school policy, and this limit to confidentiality will be stated in advance in the information materials so that participants understand it before taking part. Attention will also be given to the potential for the research itself to be experienced as burdensome, and fieldwork will be scheduled so as not to disrupt teaching or add materially to teachers’ workload.
Timeline
The study is planned over a nine-month period, aligned with a single academic year. The phasing, including the deliberate overlap between fieldwork and the collection of end-of-term attainment data, is shown in Figure 2.

In narrative terms, the first two months are given to consolidating the literature review, finalising the instruments and completing the ethics application. The third month covers recruitment, the distribution of information and consent materials, and the collection of baseline attainment data. Fieldwork runs across months four to six and comprises teacher interviews, questionnaire administration, group interviews and the collection of documentary examples, with end-of-term attainment data gathered as that window closes in month six. Months seven and eight are devoted to analysis across both strands and to their integration, and the final month to writing up, revision and submission. The timeline includes contingency within the fieldwork window to accommodate the rhythms of the school calendar, including assessment periods and holidays, which are the principal foreseeable threat to the schedule.
Expected Contribution
The study is expected to make a modest but useful contribution on three levels. Empirically, it will provide a detailed, context-rich account of feedback practice in one secondary setting, connecting attainment data with the perspectives of those who give and receive feedback. Although the findings will not be statistically generalisable, they may offer transferable insight to comparable schools and add a practitioner-oriented case to a literature that is often intervention-based. Theoretically, the study will test established principles, particularly the emphasis on task-focused, actionable and timely feedback (Sadler, 1989; Hattie and Timperley, 2007; Shute, 2008), against the constraints of everyday practice, potentially refining understanding of the conditions under which those principles hold and of the mechanisms, self-regulation and motivation, through which feedback is proposed to act. Practically, by foregrounding pupil voice and teacher rationale, the study aims to inform school feedback and marking policy, supporting approaches that are both effective for learning and sustainable in terms of teacher workload. In this respect the work aligns with a wider concern, articulated by the Independent Teacher Workload Review Group (2016) and the Education Endowment Foundation (2021) alike, to ensure that the considerable effort teachers invest in feedback yields commensurate benefit for pupils.
