Text that is very uniform, repetitive, and full of stock phrasing tends to score higher. That is a statement about writing style only — it is not evidence that any particular tool was used. Strong human academic writing, especially in a formal register, can trigger these signals too.
Commercial AI detectors usually estimate two things: perplexity (how predictable the word choices are) and burstiness (how much sentence length varies). Predictable, uniform text is scored as more likely to be machine-generated. The problem is that these are only probabilities, not proof. Independent studies and the vendors themselves acknowledge meaningful error rates. Detectors have wrongly flagged human work — including writing by non-native English speakers, whose phrasing can look more uniform — and they can be fooled by lightly edited machine text. Because of this, many universities have stopped treating detector scores as standalone evidence of misconduct. No detector can reconstruct the history of how a document was written, so none can truly prove authorship.
If your draft reads generic, a few habits help. Vary your sentence length deliberately — follow a long, complex sentence with a short, punchy one. Cut filler openers like "in today's world" and "it is important to note" and get straight to the point. Add specifics: real examples, named studies, figures, and your own critical analysis rather than broad summary. Read your work aloud to catch repeated phrasing, and replace recycled words with more precise ones. Most importantly, make an argument that reflects your own reading and thinking; that voice is very hard to fake.
